Quando me diziam que o cover que o velhinho Johnny Cash fez de Nine Inch Nails (puta e sui generis homenagem! - tão sui generis que as pessoas costumam achar que foi o NIN quem coverizou o Johnny Cash) era poderoso, eu não imaginava tudo o que realmente é.

Primeiro assisti ao vídeo (dirigido pelo Mark Romanek): face enrugada cantando essa letra (aqui embaixo) do filho da puta Trent Reznor, sentado ao piano. E, durante a segunda assistência, eu corri para o soulseek, baixar essa versão de 'Hurt'. Em seguida, coloquei no CD-player a versão original dos NIN, contida no disco 'The downward spiral', e, "balada" que é, desaparece ao lado do PESO da voz e do piano do velho Cash. Afinal, ele é o cara que tocou fogo numa floresta. (E o Trent tocou fogo no Sonic Youth.)

Johnny Cash lançou quatro discos de covers com o Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Slayer, RHCP, The Jayhawks), em que são destacadas a sua voz barítona, uma produção minimal e alguns duetos com convidados. O que contém 'Hurt' e 'Personal Jesus', dos Depeche Mode, é o quarto - 'American IV: the man comes around' (2002). Os outros destaques (sem eu ter ouvido ainda) são 'I see a darkness', do Bonnie Prince Billy, em 'American III: solitary man' (2000); 'Rowboat', do Beck, abrindo 'Unchained' (1996), correspondente ao 'American II); e 'Bird on a wire', do Leonard Cohen, e 'Down there by the train', do Tom Waits, em 'American recordings' (1994).
